The factory 68-RFE pump housing is not large enough to supply the transmission with the required oil volume that it needs to keep pressure high at low engine RPMs. This causes the 68-RFE transmission to run low on oil pressure while causing or pulling heavy loads in 4th, 5th and 6th gears. The low oil volume and pressure causes the over drive clutches to slip causing 5th and 6th gear failure. The other issue with the factory pump is the cast material that used is weak and unstable. The inexpensive cast material warps over time causing hydraulic cross leaks between the pump half and the steel separator plate. These cross leaks cause many issues that end in transmission failure.
Some of these issues are transmission over heating, converter clutch apply when the vehicle is stopped, Rationality codes, cooler flow loss, delayed engagement to name a few. ATS has redesigned the 68-RFE pump to eliminate all of these issues and it’s manufactured out of billet tool grade Aluminum. The tolerances are controlled to provide maximum oil pressure and volume. The tight tolerances guarantee our billet pump will provide 100% of the pressure that the TCM is requesting during low en[...]
