    The most important details to keep in mind when modifying or maintaining an Early 99 truck revolve around the turbocharger and intake plumbing.

    • The Intake Spider: As shown in the comparison above, the Early 99 intake manifold spider utilizes smaller 2-inch intake plenums compared to the larger 2.5-inch plenums found on Late 99-03 models. It also lacks the intake heater port found on later designs.

    • The Turbocharger: The Early 99 features a smaller, unique turbocharger with a 4-bolt compressor housing outlet, paired with a shorter turbo pedestal and a smaller wastegate actuator.

    • Upgrading Airflow: If you are looking to boost horsepower, you can choose to run upgraded drop-in turbochargers designed specifically for the Early 99 configuration, or utilize complete conversion kits to swap over to the more common Late 99-03 style intake plenums, up-pipes, and larger turbochargers.

    Fueling, Electronics, and Chassis Compatibility

On the fuel side, the Early 99 utilizes AB-code split-shot injectors, which require specific electronic calibration compared to the AD-code injectors used in later 7.3L models. Additionally, the high-pressure oil pump (HPOP) and under-valve-cover harness connectors have distinct mid-year variations. Down on the chassis, the front-end suspension utilizes a unique track bar and smaller brake rotors than later 1999.5+ trucks.
