The Motorcraft FD-4596 (Ford part number F81Z-9N184-AA) is a genuine OEM drop-in fuel filter and water separator element designed for 1999–2003 7.3 Powerstroke engines. It installs directly inside the factory engine valley fuel filter bowl to protect high-pressure HEUI injectors from fine particulate contamination, debris, and emulsified water. Motorcraft builds this filter with proprietary multi-fiber high-efficiency media engineered to separate water efficiently and capture harmful particles down to OEM specifications without restricting high-load fuel delivery.
Clogged filter media, engine hesitation under load, hard starts, black smoke, and injector plunger scoring caused by dirt or contaminated diesel fuel are what this filter fixes. Because HEUI fuel injectors operate under extreme hydraulic pressures, running dirty fuel or failing to change the primary fuel filter every 15,000 miles causes premature nozzle wear, injector tip erosion, and fuel pressure drops across the heads. It includes the replacement fuel filter element and matching rubber filter bowl lid seal ring; the fuel filter bowl assembly, fuel heater, and composite lid are sold separately.
It fits 1999–2003 7.3 Powerstroke Super Duty trucks, Excursions, and E-Series vans equipped with the factory fuel filter housing.
Fitment
- 1999–2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty 7.3L Powerstroke
- 1999–2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty 7.3L Powerstroke
- 1999–2003 Ford F-450 Super Duty 7.3L Powerstroke
- 1999–2003 Ford F-550 Super Duty 7.3L Powerstroke
- 2000–2003 Ford Excursion 7.3L Powerstroke
- 1999–2003 Ford E-Series Vans 7.3L Powerstroke
- Replaces Ford OEM part number F81Z-9N184-AA
- OEM drop-in multi-fiber filter media with integrated water separation
- Includes new filter cap lid square-cut O-ring seal
- Filter element and seal ring only
Open the yellow fuel drain valve on the side of the bowl with a drain catch hose attached before unscrewing the filter lid to avoid spilling fuel across the engine valley. Clean the inside of the bowl with a lint-free cloth and inspect the bottom heating element for debris or thermal damage. Lightly coat the new lid O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel or clean engine oil prior to threading the cap back on; hand-tighten until snug without using cheater bars or impact tools to avoid cracking the plastic lid. Cycle the ignition key to the run position 2–3 times for 20 seconds each to let the frame lift pump fill the bowl and purge air before cranking.
