1999.5-2003 7.3L Powerstroke Powermax Turbo Garrett GTP38R

Thumbnail Filmstrip of 1999.5-2003 7.3L Powerstroke Powermax Turbo Garrett GTP38R Images

The Garrett GTP38R PowerMax is a ball-bearing turbo for a 1999.5–2003 7.3 Powerstroke. It drops in place of the stock GTP38 on an F-Series or Excursion. It is not a rebuilt stock turbo.

The compressor is a 66 mm wheel with an 88 mm exducer, which Garrett rates at about 33 percent more flow than the stock 80 mm wheel. The cover is a ported shroud, used to widen the map and cut surge. The turbine housing is 1.00 A/R instead of the stock .84, which is how they get the backpressure and the EGTs down. The cartridge is Garrett’s dual ball bearing, so there is no thrust bearing to wipe at higher boost. Garrett’s limit is 40 psi. A 4-inch inlet hose and the oil seal rings are in the kit. The usual part number is 739619-5004S.

A dry PowerMax will show more shaft play than a journal turbo until it has oil in it. That is normal. It will not fit an early 1999 or OBS truck. It cannot be shipped to California.

The stock 3-inch boot will not fit this inlet. A tune is what turns the extra air into power. The Wicked Wheel for this turbo is the WW38R, not the WW38.

Q David Buchstein • 04/16/2025, 1:24:24 PM Is the EBPV actuator included? Also do you ship to Baja? I'm stranded here until I get parts
A 04/22/2025, 6:29:55 PM No you move the one over from your stock turbo. You could also delete that EVPV with one of our kits while you are changing the turbo.
Q Travis Labrum • 05/18/2025, 4:14:55 PM My truck is a 1997 obs. Truck already has this turbo but compressor wheel looks as if it ate something. Can you ship to California for a non smog vehicle?
A 05/19/2025, 4:04:40 PM All products are clearly marked under the warranty if they are California Restricted.

Packaged well in shipping. You will need high flow outlet if deleting EBV. Don't expect the "JET" sound you get from a 6.0 but you will notice a distinctive sound, and some increase in HP even without a tune. Plan on a good half day for install. Overall very pleased,,

I had previously the turbo upgrade kit, the wheel an larger housing an it was great. But going for the complete turbo is so much better! Quite bit more power an runs an sounds much healthier!
